Chapter Fourteen

We stood before a crystal door similar in design to the one we’d used to first enter the pyramid. I unlocked it with a strike of my tuning fork and a flick of the control orb.

‘OK, here goes nothing,’ I said as we stepped outside, my Empyrean Key in hand.

Everything was just as it had been before. The buildings we’d seen so vividly brought back to life over in E8 were now just a boulder field stretching away, underlining the scale of destruction that had happened here. In the far distance the sandstorm looked considerably thinner but was still being held back by an invisible wall surrounding the site of the ancient city.

‘I never thought I’d be so relieved to see a pile of rubble and desert,’ Jack said.

‘Yes, in other circumstances you’d be in your element visiting Atlantis as it used to be,’ I replied.

‘Absolutely, but not when witnessing its destruction time after time and the effect on the people who lived there.’

‘I know. I can only begin to imagine what Poseidon’s head space must be like. I’m surprised he hasn’t gone insane, if that’s a thing AIs can do?’

‘Maybe only in the sense that he should have forgiven himself a very long time ago.’

I took a moment to look into Jack’s eyes. ‘I guess we all carry guilt in some form or other – but just like we told Poseidon, it’s all about looking forward.’

Jack reached out and gently cupped my face in his hand. ‘It most certainly is.’

‘God, will you stop looking at me like that? We’re meant to be on a mission but right now all I want to do is kiss you.’

Jack gently chuckled. ‘Yeah, we need to keep focused – so let’s go and kick Alvarez’s ass.’

I held up the Empyrean Key, struck it with my tuning fork and selected the three wavy lines icon. The world shimmered and morphed into a ghostly version of the twilight zone. The ground and our bodies blurred as the particles making up our reality were turned into waveform versions of themselves. The pyramid next to us, along with the stone orb in my hand, were the only solid objects in this fluctuating universe of energy.

Within the crystal walls of the pyramid, the true beauty of the light show was spectacular. Infinite patterns of geometry danced and spun in constantly shifting shapes, every colour imaginable cycling through them.

‘Wow, that’s pretty psychedelic,’ Jack said, gazing at them.

‘If you ever wanted to know what my basic visual synaesthesia looks like when triggered by a sound, that’s it, but on steroids.’

‘To see the world as you do is always astonishing,’ Jack said as we started to head round the pyramid.

The TR-3B was blazing its laser canon into the hidden doorway as we rounded the corner. In the twilight zone the craft was a ghostly version of itself and we could see partly through the hull to the spinning plasma in its gravity-reduction drive. There was a two-person crew inside – a man and a woman.
